Rescheduling Policy
Prometric imposes a fee on USMLE examinees who modify their testing appointments, including rescheduling, canceling, or changing the test center location, within forty-five days of their scheduled test date. However, no fee is incurred for changes made 46 days or more before the scheduled test.
The fee amount and whether it applies are determined by the date of the appointment change, based on the local time at the Regional Registration Center for the Prometric Testing Region.
How much does it cost to reschedule USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3? Rescheduling Fee Charges for 2024
Effective January 1, 2024, changes made 46 days or more before the test incur no fee. Within 31-45 days, a $35 fee applies, escalating to $100 for changes made 6-30 days prior. Examinees in the US and Canada face fees of $137-$275 for changes made 5 or fewer days before the test, while fees outside these regions range from $352-$396.
Beginning January 1, 2024, Prometric enforces appointment change fees to reschedule USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 examinations. The fees, listed in US dollars, vary depending on the timing of the appointment change and the testing region.
46 days or more before the scheduled test date
For changes made 46 days or more before the scheduled test date, no fee is applied across all testing regions for Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3.
31-45 days before the test date
31-45 days before the test date, a $35 fee is incurred for all regions and exam steps.
6-30 days before the test date
Changes made within 6-30 days before the test date result in a $100 fee across all regions and exam steps.
5 or fewer days
For changes made 5 or fewer days before the scheduled test date, examinees in the US and Canada face fees of $137 for Step 1, $155 for Step 2 CK, and $275 for Step 3. Outside the US and Canada, the fees escalate to $352 for Step 1 and $396 for Step 2 CK.
Notably, for Step 3, if rescheduling involves one or more but not all days of the appointment between 1 and 5 days prior to the first scheduled test date, a specific rescheduling fee of $138 applies.
Things to keep in mind before starting the process
Before we start the process to reschedule USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 , you should keep in mind that Prometric could have already canceled and rescheduled your appointments at your testing center because of unforeseen circumstances such as extreme weather or natural disasters, power outages, technical issues, etc.
First, confirm that the test is still scheduled at your selected test center before applying for the reschedule. If the test was canceled by Prometric because of any of the reasons mentioned above, you will receive a cancellation email, follow the instructions contained in the cancellation email to reschedule your examination, getting extra time to study for free without any extra charges.
How to reschedule USMLE step 1?
First, go to the rescheduling section of the USMLE official website. Then click on the “Visit Prometric” button under the paragraph with the heading, “How to reschedule”.
After that click on Reschedule or Cancel under the sidebar section of USMLE Step 1, 2 or 3 exam whether you want to reschedule USMLE Step 1, 2, or 3.
Then enter your Appointment Confirmation number and the first four characters of your Last name. Then follow the steps you are directed with.
